Reflection
My single biggest AHA moment that I will take away from this class is to learn about people and understand them before judging them. Everyone is different but that doesn't make them bad. All of the works we read this semester in class ended up being related some how. That showed me that people can all have their similarities if we just take the time to get to know people better. Reading the literature helped me to understand people that I wouldn't normally be able to relate to.
My single biggest hmm, I still have is feeling empathy for people rather than sympathy. I want to relate to people and be able to help them with prejudices and racism, but because I come from a family of privilege it's hard for me to know how to help people. I don't just want to have sympathy for them, I want to make friends and show them they can rise above racism. Reading poetry and other works helps me to see other ethnic views and how they have overcome their own hardships.
Ten years from now, I will remember that this class taught me to be understanding of people's differences no matter what it is. Don't judge people based on their looks or how they speak. Every person all over the world is different, and Americans aren't necessarily the best. We don't have the right to put people down because they have a different skin color or don't speak English well. I have learned to be accepting of everyone. I don't have to like them, I just have to tolerate them.
This class connects to the other general education classes I have taken in many ways. I learned a lot about history through the pieces I read for this class that related back to my History 1700 class based around slavery and war. We read pieces about slavery and war and the impact they had on innocent people. This class connected to my fine arts class because we looked at many painting of women through the times and videos on cultural events and rituals. This class also connected to my biological science, anthropology class on human origins because we discussed how race is not a real thing but ethnicity is. We also learned a bit about how other ethnicities believe in their own ancestral origins. This class was very good at covering multiple topics that need to be taught at a college level.
