The Impossible
The deadly tsunami from real life brought to the movie screen. This movie was made to show the world what happened to one family on their Christmas vacation when they were hit by one of the deadliest tsunamis on record. I believe that this movie captured the natural disaster very accurately because they made the movie based off of a real event. The tsunami moved the movie forward because it was the center focus of the movie. Without it of course, there would be no movie. It was incredible to see the damage that it caused to the whole area. I wondered if the video footage from the movie of the water flow on land was accurate to the real event. I researched film from the actual event and it was pretty much the same. The force of the water flowing over the land was strong enough to move cars, and buses, and knock down buildings and trees. The water pulled any loose debris in it's path making the flow of the water even more dangerous for survivors of the initial wave.
Background
A tsunami is a Japanese word for "harbor wave". Tsunamis form in a few different ways. These ways are, underwater earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, or astroids. Tsunamis travel in a circular motion from the originating point. The tsunami that was in this movie was created by a magnitude 9.1 earthquake in the middle of the ocean. The minimum magnitude of an earthquake that will trigger a tsunami is 7.5. (Open Geography Education).

Director's Version of the Tsunami vs. Real Life
I think that the producer's of this movie did a good job of depicting a natural disaster. The death toll from this Tsunami was unbelievably high. In the first day alone, more than 150,000 people were either dead or missing. Millions of people were homeless in 11 different countries. (National Geographic, 2010.). IN the movie it showed all of the hospitals with piles of bodies and all of the injured people. The director definitely didn't hold back when displaying the graphic scenes of injuries caused by the destruction of the Tsunami. The waves that hit the land from the after shock of the tsunami's original wave caused much damage as well. The family was injured even more and I'm sure millions of other people were as well. I understand now, why this tsunami is considered one of the deadliest natural disasters in history. When I first watched this movie I didn't know how deadly the tsunami had been because I was very young when it had happened. The movie seemed to far-fetched that a family with young boys could all survive it and find each other in the end. At the end of the movie when it showed pictures of the real family I realized it was a true story and these people truly had to endure the impossible. Nature doesn't spare anyone when it decides to set a tsunami on 11 countries killing hundreds of thousands of people. Nations are still repairing from the damage that happened over ten years ago.

Final Project: Hurricanes
Description and Reflection
I decided to create this art piece because I love using acrylic paint and I am very intrigued by Hurricanes. They are such a powerful force of nature and I wanted to try to paint that fury down on a canvas. I think that the first piece represents darkness and the creation of a monster. The second piece is solitary and still because the storm has reached its destination. The last piece, the storm is dissipating over the continent and becoming just a vicious thunderstorm. I focused on the three canvas's as being a timeline from beginning to end like how the storm travels from the middle of the ocean and ended over land.
I believe that this class has prepared me for my career in many ways. I will be starting a new major next fall in Parks, Recreation, and Tourism. This class was all about the weather and the forces of nature, and my new major and career is focused outdoors. I plan on owning my own outfitting company in Alaska and well, I can't do that without knowing about the weather first. I have learned that Alaska sits on a fault line so it is at risk of Earthquakes. Alaska is also situated along the coastline and so I have to be aware of the storms that come along with that coastline. There are very severe winters there that I need to know how to live in and manage a business in. I grew up in Montana in the harsh winters but Alaska's are far more harsh than any of the lower forty-eight states. I now know the warning signs of severe weather, flash flooding, avalanches, and other types of mass wasting. It is so important to know how to read the weather and what to expect when you are out in it, and even more important to be prepared for what you are NOT expecting.
