Course Reflection
I have learned many skills in this English 1010 class. The final two papers I wrote, the annotated bibliography and the position synthesis, represents the critical thinking and writing processes I have learned through this course. These papers were great indicators that I sharpened my rhetorical knowledge. An example would be that I found outside sources for my annotated bibliography and made sure that these sources were credible and that I summarized and explained the points of each article correctly. I developed my critical thinking skills by summarizing articles without giving my opinion, just stating what they say, then analyzing the article, and after I have done that I lead into my views on each topic. This was all done in the annotated bibliography. In the position synthesis paper I presented “I say” in the introduction and summary, as well as throughout the piece. This piece of writing was a way to sow that we could blend the information we found into one paper, sorting the same ideas into paragraphs, instead of by author of each article. I used MLA format in both of my pieces of writing. Every aspect of the paper was written in MLA, the header, the page numbers, and how the paragraphs were organized.
I have learned so much in this writing class that it has made me a better writer already. I know that as long as I continue to write papers and practice the skills I have learned my papers will only continue to improve. I didn’t know how to use MLA at all before this class, because in high school we only used APA, so now it is much easier for me to write my college papers in the correct form. I will also Take with me to further classes, how to properly summarize someone else’s pieces. I will not give my own opinion at all, just state what it was about, than in a separate paragraph I will state how well their rhetorical appeals were, than finally I will state my own opinion in another paragraph. This class has taught me a lot as a writer, to organize my papers properly, use transition words, separate they say and I say from each other, and most importantly to enjoy writing.
